That’s what we heard. Is it true? I have not said anything of the sort, but people come up with things. Even if I knew something, to whom would I say it?
- Geronda, war is such a barbarous thing.
- If people did not have the «courtesy» of sin they would not have reached this barbarous state. Even more barbarous is this moral degradation. People’s bodies and souls are falling apart. Someone told me, «They call Athens a ‘jungle’ but no one is leaving the city. Every one calls it a ‘jungle’ and yet everyone still gathers there.» Human beings have come down to the level of animals. You know what animals do when they enter the stable; they defecate and urinate… Then, as the manure ferments, they feel warm and don’t feel like getting themselves out of there. The same happens with human beings; they feel the comfort of sin and don’t have the heart to leave. They smell the stench, but they stay anyway. You see, if someone were to come inside the stable he would not be able to stand the stench; but those who have got used to it are not bothered.
- Geronda, some people say that it’s not only today that people are sinning; this has been going on ever since ancient Rome.
- Yes, but the Romans were idolaters. And when the Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, he was writing to baptized idolaters who had gone back to their bad habits.1 We should not take as example a decadent era. Today, they have taken sin and made it fashionable. Have a look at us, an Orthodoxliation and yet, we are in such a state! Imagine how other nations must be! And the worst thing is that today, that the sin has become so fashionable, if people see someone who does not go with the flow, avoids sin and is pious, they consider him old-fashioned and backward. For them not to sin is considered an insult and to sin is considered progress. And this is the worst thing of all that could happen. If today, all those who live in sin would only acknowledge their condition, God would have mercy on them. Instead, they justify the unjustifiable and they glorify sin. This is the greatest blasphemy against the Holy Spirit: they take sin to be progress and morality the status quo. For this reason, the wages of those who struggle in the world and maintain a pure life are great and of great worth.
In the old days, if one were a pervert or a drunk, they would be ashamed to appear in public because people would scorn them. A woman who had strayed even a little did not dare to come out of her house; and in a way, this was a sort of restraint. These days, if someone is upright, say a young woman who lives a life of piety, people will say, «Look at how she lives.» Back then, when lay people sinned, poor souls, they felt their sinfulness, bowed their head a bit and would not mock one who lived a spiritual life. On the contrary, they actually admired them. Today, people have no sense of their guilt and there is no respect. All standards have been levelled. And people make fun of those that don’t live a worldly life.
The Checks of Conscience
Although France is an advanced nation – it’s not underdeveloped – recently, eighty thousand people converted to Islam.2 Why? Because they have turned sin into a fashion. You see, they are bothered by their conscience, they know that something is wrong and they want to set their conscience at ease. And just like the ancient Greeks made up the twelve gods in order to justify their passions, these people seek a religion that would put their souls to rest. Islam is, in a way, the best suitable solution.

It allows them to take as many women as they want for wives, it promises in the next life «mountains of rice, lakes of yogurt and rivers of honey»! And no matter what their sins are, once their dead body is washed with hot water, they are cleansed! They go to Allah clean! What else could they ask for? It’s all so convenient. But these French converts will not find rest. Although they are trying, they will not find rest because the passions can never be justified.
No matter what people do, even if they are insensitive, heartless and soulless, they will not find peace and rest. They try to justify the unjustifiable, but inside they are tormented and agitated; that is why they are constantly craving entertainment, listening to loud music, getting drunk, and watching television. They want distraction in order to forget because their conscience bothers them. They can’t even rest when they sleep. You see, there is the conscience. The first «Holy Scripture» that God gave to Adam and Eve was conscience, and we inherit it from our parents like a photocopy. Not matter how hard we may try to run over our conscience, it is still there checking on us. That is why people say, «This thing is eating him up.» Indeed, there is nothing sweeter than having a clear conscience. One feels like he has wings; he soars.
Separation From God Is Hell
I cannot remember even a day without divine consolation. Sometimes, of course, interruptions occur and I feel bad. Then, I can understand how horrible are the lives of most people, who live without this consolation because they have distanced themselves from God. The more one distances himself from God, the worse things become. One may have nothing else, but having God is all that he needs. That’s it! Even if one has everything but lacks God, in his heart he will be tortured. That’s why it is important to get as close to God as possible. It is only next to Him that we can find true and eternal joy. We taste bitter poison when we live apart from sweet Jesus. When a sinful man becomes a man of God again, a prince, he is fed with divine pleasure, with heavenly sweetness and feels the delight of Paradise; though he lives on earth, he gets to taste the joy of Heaven. Every day that goes by, his joy grows bigger and he gets to wonder if there is in Heaven something higher than what he experiences here on earth. Such is his situation, that he cannot do any work; his knees bend over like candlesticks from that divine warmth and sweetness while his heart leaps and tries to shatter its thin cage to run away, because earth and all earthly things appear to be worthless.
In the beginning, man had communion with God. Later, however, when he moved away from the Grace of God, he was like someone who used to live in a palace and then was banned from it and now views it from a distance and weeps. Just as a child suffers away from its mother, man also suffers when he is distanced from God. We are tormented. Separation from God is hell. The devil has managed to distance people from God so much that they have reached the point of worshipping statues and sacrificing even their children to them. It’s a horrible thing! Where do the demons find all these deities? The god Chemosh! Just hearing his name is enough.3 But the devil is the most tortured being of all because he is the farthest removed from God, from Love. When love departs, hell sets in. What is the opposite of love? Evil and malice; evil equals suffering.

One who has distanced himself from God becomes prone to demonic influence, while the other one who is close to God receives divine Grace. He who already has God’s Grace will be given more. And he who has only a little and scorns it, he will lose it all.4 The Grace of God is missing from most people today because by sinning they throw away whatever small portion of it they may have. And when divine Grace is gone, the demons rush at human beings and take possession of them.

Depending on their distance from God, people are in constant pain in this life and will be in eternal pain in the other life. For the taste and joy of Paradise begin, to an extent, in this life, depending on how much one lives according to the will of God. Either we shall experience a portion of the heavenly joy here on earth and will then go to Heaven, or we shall experience a portion of hell here and, God forbid, we shall end up in hell. Paradise is goodness. Hell is malice and evildoing. When we do something good, we feel joy. When we do something wrong, something evil, we suffer. The more good one does, the more joy he feels. The more one causes harm, the more his soul suffers. Can a thief feel any joy? He cannot. But the one who does good, he feels joy. Even if one finds something on the street and keeps it for himself, he will not find rest. Although he doesn’t know to whom it belongs, nor has he harmed anyone or stolen it, he cannot find peace. Imagine if he had actually stolen it! Even when we receive something, a gift, we still do not feel the same joy that we do when we give. How then could someone who steals or takes away unjustly, feel joy? That is why one can look at people who live unjust lives and see on their faces so many grimaces!
The Boss You Work For Will Pay Your Wages
People who live away from God are always without consolation and are doubly tormented. If one does not believe in God and in the future life, he is not only deprived of divine consolation but also brings eternal condemnation upon his soul. The boss you work for will pay your wages. If you work for the devil, he will pay you by making your life miserable here on earth. If you work for virtue, Christ will pay you. And the more you work for Christ, the more you will shine and find bliss. But we say, «Am I a fool to work for Christ?» Isn’t this horrible that we do not recognize Christ’s sacrifice for humanity? Christ was crucified to save us from sin, to cleanse mankind. Look at what Christ has done for us. What have we done for Him?
People want to sin, but they also want God to be good to them. He should keep forgiving us while we continue to sin. We want to do whatever we like and we want Him to forgive us. He is supposed to forgive us no matter what we do. People don’t have faith in God and they rush to commit sin. All that is evil begins from lack of faith. People don’t believe in eternal life and for this reason nothing stops them; they treat others unjustly, they abandon their children… The things that take place …, so many grave sins. Not even the Holy Fathers had foreseen such sins in the Sacred Canons. It’s like Sodom and Gomorrah when God had said, «I don’t believe that such sins exist; I should go and see for myself.»5
If people don’t repent and return to God, they will lose eternal life. Man must be helped in order to feel the deeper meaning of life, to come to his senses and to experience divine consolation. The goal is to rise spiritually, not simply to avoid sin.

l.Cf. Rom 1:24-32.

2. This was said in November of 1988.
3. Chemosh was a god of the Moabites, descendents of Moab, the oldest son of Lot (Cf. I Kg 11:7). In Greek, the word sounds like the noun chamos(χαμός) that means loss, doom, desolation or things going out of control.
4. Cf. Lk 19:26.
5. Cf.

4. Cf. Lk 19:26.
5. Cf. Introduction

In the Orthodox Church there are two ways to salvation. They are:

                   A/ the married life
                   B/ Monasticism

Both paths are blessed by God. Indeed Saint Seraphim of Sarov had said that it does not matter which approach we take, so long as we are practising Orthodox Christians.
Tonight I would like to briefly focus on a monastic. We have had, and continue to have, many holy monastics (both women and men): Saint Anthony, Saint Xenia, Saint Mary of Egypt are only a small number of monastics who reached sainthood. The life of the monastic that I would like to discuss tonight is that of Elder Paisios. The term “Elder” means a person who has reached a high level of spiritual maturity and gained much Grace from God. The Greek equivalent of an elder is a “Geron”, whilst in Russian it is a “Staretz”.

2. Who was Elder Paisios?

Elder Paisios was born on 25 July 1924, in Cappadocia, Minor Asia. On his baptism he was given the name Arsenios by his godfather, Saint Arsenios (instead of Christos, the name chosen by his father). Shortly afterwards, his family migrated to Ipiros, Greece as refugees after the Asia Minor disaster.
Arsenios (Elder Paisios) had a deep desire to become a monastic. From a very young age he would go to the forest to pray. The Elder was drafted in the armed forces in 1945. He was recognised and admired for his good character and bravery. For example, he always asked to be based in the front line thereby preferring to put his life at greater risk than his fellow soldiers. Arsenios he did this because he realised that his fellow soldiers were likely to have had children and wives.
In 1949 he completed his national service and went to become a monastic on Mount Athos, or The Garden of the Mother of God. His spiritual struggle was centred around the need to cleanse his soul from negative thoughts and in the process cultivate positive thoughts.
He was very sensitive to other people and their needs, despite the numerous and persistent health problems that plagued him from 1966 onwards. He frequently felt weak and tired early from his ailments, but always had time for visitors and prayer towards God. His sensitivity is also shown when in hospital towards the latter part of his life. He refused visitors, only because he felt that many people would come to see him, at a time when other sick people in the hospital may not have had any visitors. The Elder’s extraordinary sensitivity towards his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ is also shown when in prayer, he would never ask God for anything for himself. He felt that he had everything, through his divine baptism in the Orthodox Church. Rather, he would spend his time hearing and consulting the many people who were burdened with pain and problems. By night, elder Paisios prayed for not only the people who asked him, but for the whole world. Thus, his whole life was centred around God and His creation, the human being.

3. The Elder’s Teachings

Many people went to Elder Paisios simply to get advice in order to solve their personal problems. This is despite the tiring journey to Mount Athos. His teachings basically stemmed from the contact with the various people who sought his advice. Some are as follows:

3a.

When human beings rely on their own thoughts and judgements, then they become susceptible to demonic influences that in turn can lead to major mistakes. The fathers of the Church did not rely on their own thoughts and judgement for matters. Rather, they relied on prayer, fasting and guidance from their spiritual father as ways by which God would guide them. Today unfortunately, we regularly see circumstances where people provide an answer even before the question is completed. This shows that some people do not hesitate to rely on their own thoughts and judgements that result in major crises in life.
In particular, we should not trust in our own thoughts because the demonic influence will be reflected:

· In occasions where thoughts are telling the individual that he/she is a good, a virtuous character, a struggler etc., which leads to provide pride
· And on the other hand lead to thoughts of despondency and that they will not be saved.

3b.

The elder regularly met people who were critical of other people. As a result, he would provide to them the following explanation:

There are only two categories of people. There is no third. The first category resembles that of a fly. A fly as you may know, has the characteristic of being attracted by uncleanliness. For example, if there is a garden full of beautiful flowers and an animal has left behind its excrement, the fly will fly over the beautiful flowers and land on the dirty part of the garden and sit there. If the fly could speak and it was asked if there were beautiful flowers anywhere, it would answer “I do not know”. It would however, say that it knew of the existence of:

· toilets
· animal wastes
· rubbish
· generally unclean places/environments

The other category of people resemble the bee. The important characteristic of a bee is that it searches for what is good and sweet. For example, lets say that a room basically contains unclean elements, but in one little corner there is a loukoumi (a Greek sweet), the bee will fly over all the rubbish and uncleanliness in the room and eventually settle on the loukoumi.
If the bee could speak and it was asked the question: Where is there rubbish? it would say it does not know, but rather could say where there were flowers, honey and generally good things.

In other words the Elder wanted people in the first category to:

· Focus on themselves and their weaknesses rather than be hypocritical and judge others.· Not to judge others because this precludes Gods mercy.

3c.

A pilgrim once asked the Elder the following:

“ Elder, I am confused because some members of the Church state obedience is the most important virtue whilst others say prayer. Some Fathers of the Church state that love. As a result I am confused as to what Christ requires of us. The Elder responded as follows:

A pre-condition for acquiring any virtue is not to have your own will but rather to totally, unconditionally and voluntarily submit it to God and your fellow man. It is then that Divine Inspiration guides one in life and simultaneously also acquires virtues. The situation is like a rocket that is ready for a mission into space. The countdown begins so that when zero is reached the rocket blasts off. In a likewise manner, when our own will reaches zero, then we take off spiritually.
Thus, the Elder was trying to emphasise humility as the mother of all virtues. That is, from humility one can acquire all the other virtues, with God’s help.

3d

That person who desires a miracle, an extraordinary occurrence from God so as to believe, is not thinking in a noble manner. It is not that God cannot do this, but rather He avoids this so as to encourage the human being to come to Him on the basis of self will, based on the love of Christ, and not because God has the power to perform miracles.
God therefore, wants people to love Him because of the love He has shown towards them, particularly through the mystery of the Incarnation of God in becoming man through the person of Jesus Christ.

3e

A person once asked the Elder what differentiates a Saint from other people. The Elder responded by saying:

“It is Divine Justice”

The person then asked the Elder what is Divine Justice. The Elder responded by stating the following example:

Let’s assume that two people are sitting in a room with a bowl of ten (10) apricots. If one of the two eats more than five (5) apricots then this is gluttony. If both eat five (5) apricots each then this is human justice. But if one of the two people realises that the other likes apricots and eats less than five (5), in order to allow the other person to eat more than five (5), then this is Divine Justice.

3f

God will not listen to our prayers and our night vigils will be in vain if we are unjust towards our fellow human beings.

3g

The Elder once said to a person in dialogue that a spiritual struggle will be fruitless if it self reliant because it indicates the person’s egoism. Rather, a person should struggle with the assistance of prayer to God. This shows humility and in the process God will bless the spiritual struggle which in turn will lead to fruitful results.

3h

Prayer, and in particular alms giving are extremely beneficial for departed relatives who did not repent whilst living on the earth.

3i

Once a person said to the Elder:

“Elder, many see regular Church goers as Pharisees because they lack love and sacrifice towards others”

The Elder responded by saying:

“For a start, pharisaism means undertaking works in order to be seen and applauded. Secondly, how do these critics know that regular Church goers lack love and sacrifice towards their fellow human being?”

Then the Elder said to this person a story.

There was once a region in Greece that was plagued by drought. The monks of the monastery would give whatever surplus money that came their way to the suffering farmers.
However, there was a certain monk who did not fit this pattern. As a result, many saw him as “tight” with money. However, when the monk died, many farmers from the surrounding area came to his funeral to pay their last respects for the invaluable assistance provided to them.
Thus, the monk had SECRETLY given his surplus money to those farmers in chronic need thereby simultaneously fulfilling his Christian duty.

3j

When a person lives simply, understands his/her weaknesses and relies on God for protection and help, then the Good God seeing this provides Grace and help to the extent that it is spiritually visible.

3k

On the issue of death, the elder would say that there is no death, but rather a movement from one life to another.

3l

Elder Paisios also taught in a practical manner. One day, three people had visited him. He provided loukoumi and water to the first two to greet them in the traditional manner. However, when he came to the third person, the elder dropped the loukoumi on the ground, stepped on it and gave it to the third person. When this person asked why he was given a loukoumi grounded in dirt, the Elder said:

“This is what you are doing with the morals of the youth with your activities”

The important point to note therefore is not only the lesson that elder Paisios gave, but also the divine foresight given to him by God.

4. Elder Paisios’s Works

More importantly however, the Elder put his teachings into practise. The essence of his teachings was love toward God and His creation the human being. Indeed, he practised this out of divine love; that is, as payback for God’s unrestricted love to him and all people.

          Mark 10, v43-46

“Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your
servant. And whoever desires to become great among you shall
be your servants. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be
slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,
but to serve and to give His life a ransom for man”

The Elder experienced his first health problem in 1966 when respiratory problems led to his hospitalisation for a number of months and eventually resulted in a large part of his lungs being removed. As a result, he had to take numerous pills over a prolonged period that caused him to feel weak and to get tired easily.
Elder Paisios’s respiratory problem deteriorated further and required further surgery and the elimination of another part of his lung. This in turn aggravated the Elder’s weakness and further shortened the time within which he would feel tired. Another side effect of his second lung operation was that he would get cold easily which required at least a light jumper, even in the summer.
The strong antibiotics that the Elder took led to a complication in his intestines where most of the food eaten would cause him discomfort.
In latter years he also suffered from an illness which created severe pain. Furthermore, from 1988 he suffered from bleeding of the intestine that eventually became worse. As a result, he had to go to the toilet regularly and at the same time found it difficult to sleep at night because of the acute pain. In the end, the pain was so severe that he once fainted.
Despite all his health problems which significantly weakened him and led to prolonged and severe pain, Elder Paisios nevertheless, being motivated by love, neglected himself in order to help his fellow human being in whatever way he could. Thus, he endeavoured to apply in his life, the important emphasises placed on sacrifice and love in the Bible. For example in James it states that:

“Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead”

                   James 2, Verse 17,

Moreover,

In Mark 10, v43-46

Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many”
Thus, he regularly accepted visitors with all their problems, which he also made his own, dedicating by time to discuss matters. The Elder’s sacrifice was also shown when on a visit to the women’s monastery of St John the Theologian, he stood for hours on end, despite his severe pain to give his blessing to the many people who were there.
The Elder’s love even extended to people that had never met him. For example, between 9-10pm he would pray for those people working at night and between 10-12pm for those people travelling. From midnight onwards he would pray for all people who were in night clubs, and thereafter for all other people such as those in positions of government and influence so that would reach the correct decisions to the benefit of society.
Elder Paisios only gave himself a few hours of sleep in the early morning in order to give him enough strength to confront the next day’s visitors and their problems.
The Elder also spent a little time during the day carving little wooden crosses and icons that he gave to visitors as a blessing.
Elder Paisios’s respect for people was so great that he would regularly make prostrations in front of them. When a fellow monk asked him why he did this, he answered:

“I see the Divine Grace which the person has acquired
during the holy mystery of Baptism”

Thus, the Elder’s actions showed that he took to heart the words of our Lord Jesus Christ:

“Greater love has no one than this, then to lay down one’s
                      life for his friends”

                   John 15, Verse 13.

Thus, Elder Paisios lay down his life every day and for all, both God and the human being, with absolutely no regard for his life.

5. On the Elder’s Miracles

5a

A person had only one eye that the doctors suggested had to be operated upon. However, this person was extremely reluctant, fearing that if the operation was unsuccessful, then he would completely lose his eyesight.
He then travelled to Mount Athos to consult Elder Paisios. In particular, this man asked the Elder whether he should go through with the operation. The Elder responded by stating that he should go through with the operation. However, the man again informed the Elder of his fear of losing his eyesight. The Elder tried to persuade this man to go through with the operation. In the end, after much hesitancy, this man was persuaded to go through with the operation when the Elder had told him that if anything went wrong with the surgery, he would give him one of his own eyes. The man eventually had the operation with success. However, after the operation, the surgeon visited the patient to check on his health. At one stage, the surgeon informed the patient that:

“I couldn’t help getting the impression that whilst I was
operating upon you, somebody was guiding my hand”.

5b

A couple could not have children. Even the doctors had advised them that there was nothing further they could do to help them.
However, the husband had heard of Elder Paisios and decided to travel to Mount Athos to consult him. After the husband explained the situation, the Elder advised him not to lose heart, that his wife would eventually bear a child. This eventually happened when a baby boy was born.
After the child grew a little, the mother wanted another child. However, on this occasion the husband could not travel to Mt. Athos to ask for the Elder’s prayers because he had slept in the Lord. Nevertheless, the mother went to the tomb of the Elder, at the Monastery of St John the Theologian that is on the outskirts of Thessaloniki. She prayed to the Elder for another child.
Subsequently, another baby boy was born. He was named Paisios, in honour of the Elder, who for a second time had interceded to God for the couple.

5c

A young man went to Mt. Athos from curiosity. He had also heard about Elder Paisios and therefore, decided to visit him. However, he wanted to test and tease the Elder. This young man said to the Elder:

          “Elder, what is my name?”

The Elder replied:

“Your name is… Your name is… What are those instruments called in Athens that regulate traffic? That’s right, Grigori and Stamati!”

The young man was shocked when he realised the Elder was trying to say that his name was Gregory. As a result of the Elder’s prophetic insight this person repented and came closer to the Church.

5d

A certain person had health problems over a number of years. Doctors could not diagnose his particular health problem. He then decided to go and visit the elder to seek advice. He was told that the problem lay in the head and that a minor operation would solve the problem.
On leaving Mt Athos, he eventually went to various doctors with the information that there was a problem in the head. However, the doctors could not undertake a diagnosis because of the unavailability of the appropriate sophisticated medical equipment.
HOWEVER, after a couple of years when this equipment became available, the diagnosis was undertaken on the head, only to confirm what the elder had said a few years earlier.

5e

Elder Paisios’s prophetic insight was also evident when he informed a certain person that the Soviet Union would collapse. However, this person refused to accept this because of the military strength of that country. The elder nevertheless insisted that this would happen and that he was going to be a witness to that event.
He also took the opportunity to mention that Constantinople would return to Greek hands in the near future. This prophecy was made in 1990 when a group of students from the Athonite school went to visit the elder in order to ask him whether this would actually happen, after having heard about this from others who had been in contact with the elder. However, these students were hesitant about asking this question.
On leaving the elders keli, elder Paisios turned around and said to them:

“You should be aware that Constantinople will revert to Greek hands and you will all live to see this event”

It is important to mention that the elder performed many other miracles such as cure people from incurrable diseases such as cancer, save people from committing suicide by miraculously appearing in front of them to assist them and he was able to read the minds of people. This humble servant of God was indeed given Grace from God for both his spiritual struggle and the sacrifice and love that he showed towards people.

CONCLUSION

We may all feel awed about the achievements of Elder Paisios and become despondent that we cannot reach the same heights. However, this need not be the case as the basic purpose of tonight’s talk has been to encourage us to more fully appreciate our Orthodox faith through the Elder’s life and as a result inspire us to struggle through our own individual situations.
As I outlined at the beginning of the talk, both the monastic and married lives are blessed by God and can lead to a fuller appreciation of His existence. After all, our Church is littered with married saints, such as Saint Sophia and her 3 Daughters, Saint Photini, the Samaritan women, who had children, Saints Constantine and Helen and many others.

http://www.alopsis.gr/modules.php?name=Content&pa=printpage&pid=347

Writings from Elder Paisios

Altvater Paisios vom Berg Athos

He wrote this text c. 1975, as a letter to someone, who had asked him about it. He gave it to a visitor to post in an open envelope and gave him permission to read it and to keep a copy. This visitor gave it to us and we hope that Elder Paisios will no longer have an objection to us publishing it for the spiritual benefit of many and as proof that experienced Elders agree that the prayer of the heart is not subject to measurement and subjugation.
We present the text as given:

"Guidance about the Jesus Prayer,

A simple way for ceaseless prayer, if you want to you can use it too, which probably helps simple people who cannot get the true meaning of the neptic Holy Fathers, and run the risk of delusion.

Begin with Humility
Some (unfortunately) do not set the goal of putting off the old man (repentance, humility, and asceticism as a way of helping the sanctification of the soul) with a deep sense of their sinfulness. Then, they would naturally feel the need for Gods mercy, saying "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me," often. This with pain in their heart and then the feeling of the sweetness of divine comfort of the most Sweet Christ within their heart.

But unfortunately some people (as I mentioned) start off with a dry ascetic practice and seek after divine pleasure and lights and continually multiply their prayer-ropes and are sanctified by their calculation, reaching that conclusion (about their sanctity) from the mathematical reckoning of the greater amount of prayer-ropes they say.

They also (naturally) make footstools to the exact inch and all the other things, the bending of the head towards the heart. They regulate their breath and whatever else the watchful Saint Kallistuses and Gregorys of the Philokalia say. Then they create the false sensation that they are somewhere near the measure of those Saints.

From the moment they believe that thought, the tangalaki (the demon) immediately appears and sets up a television for them (with their fantasies) and devilish prophecies etc. of delusion follow.

For this reason, only certainty is repentance and let every spiritual edifice be built upon it and let us continually seek repentance from God and nothing else except that.
We should not ask for lights or miracles, or prophecies, or gifts of the Spirit, only for repentance. Repentance brings humility; humility will bring grace from God, because grace always goes to the humble, of necessity. Therefore, repentance is necessary for our salvation and when we have it, the grace of God will come and it will teach us what we need to do for salvation even of our fellows too, if it is necessary.

Say it Sincerely from the Heart many times.
In this way, which I mentioned (feeling the great need for Gods mercy), we will say the Jesus Prayer many times with our whole heart and we will feel, as I mentioned, the sweetness of divine comfort of the most sweet Jesus within our heart. The heart will (then) have our nous in tight embrace, as well as our whole being.

Then, and only then, will prayer not be tiring, but rather it will give rest, because we have grasped the true meaning of it. Only then do we pray without putting pressure on ourselves, but we are pressurized by our sense of honor and dignity (philotimo), which gives rise to all our spiritual upstanding generosity (leventia). This produces the fluttering of the heart. Then the heart (however stony it may be) breaks and tears burst forth from their ducts (without an effort being made to weep during the time of prayer).

You feel the need for this prayer like a hungry baby who opens its little mouth and runs into the arms of its mother to be suckled and at the same time feels very secure in its mothers loving care.

Precede with Patristic Study
Nobody doubts that the enemy will try to war against us and to disperse our thoughts. However, when preceded by a little bit of Patristic study (e.g. The Sayings of the Fathers) a lid is put on all our cares, great and small, and on the days temptations. So, it is transformed into another atmosphere, a spiritual one and you pray with concentration.

If the enemy wages war with blasphemous thoughts (from his usual wickedness and envy) do not get upset. Instead, use the demon as your worker in the following way, by not getting upset, but by saying to the enemy: "Its a good thing that you brought me those thoughts so that I can say the Jesus Prayer, because otherwise I forget to pray without ceasing." The enemy will then depart immediately, because he is only used to doing evil. I mentioned that because the enemy brings blasphemous thoughts to sensitive people (usually) to make them even more sensitive, to upset them and to cut them down.

The same applies to some that struggle in vigil over and above their strength, and with pride. When they slacken, and they do not have the strength to banish the thoughts of the enemy. They think that those blasphemous thoughts are their own, and so they suffer without reason, while the thoughts are not their own, but those of the enemy.
That is why young people should struggle in the matter of prayer with humility and discernment. They should prepare for the night. This, by not being distracted, by study and through moderate and simple food, which helps. As far as possible it should not be savory, to avoid drinking plenty of water, because that, too, is an obstacle, with the bloating that it causes. In this way, the person is helped with prayer.

It helps a great deal if the light evening meal, however light it may be, takes place at around 4 o'clock (European time), after study, fathers and so on, or else 3 hours after the main meal. Small and great prostrations beforehand, and in between each prayer-rope, help a great deal, unfreezing the machines oil. Later, after getting quite tired, he should sit down and say the Jesus Prayer, since he brings to mind his wretchedness and the great favors of God that our good God has done for him.

Then the nous is collected (as I mentioned, in the heart, on its own) and seeks Gods mercy with all his heart, with all his soul and with all his mind, without making a great effort.

The three hours after sunset help a lot (having read patristic books before sunset), as well as after midnight until sunrise. For young people it is good for them to sleep one hour after sunset, with less prayer, and to get up after midnight, in order to avoid scandalous sleep of the morning.

Naturally, discernment is required and guidance from their spiritual father, who is a requirement.

From With Elder Porphyrios: A Spiritual Child Remembers, by Constantine Yiannitsiotis, pp. 70-74. Only the name of Christ must remain inside our heart and mind; when we neglect our prayer, that is our communication with God, the devil finds the chance to confuse us with negative thoughts. Thus, we end up not knowing what we want, do, or say.”

“The soul must be constantly ready and alert and always in contact with the spiritual headquarters, that is, God. Only then, it will feel secure, full of hope and joy.
When I was in the army, during the war, I was a radio operator. I noticed that we felt secure only when we communicated with the Army Division on an hourly basis. When our communication was limited to every two hours, we felt a little bit insecure; sometimes, when we could only be in touch with them twice a day, we felt uncomfortable, lonely and lost. The same thing applies to our prayer. The more we pray, the more secure we feel, on a spiritual basis, of course.”

“When someone is involved in manual labor, it helps him a lot to say the Jesus prayer and at the same time perform his task.

When someone is doing work that needs concentration, i.e. he is driving a car, or he is operating on a patient, he should also say the Jesus prayer so God can help him and enlighten him; however, he should pray with his heart, and use his mind to concentrate on his work and thus avoid doing any mistakes.”

“The more the mind concentrates on praying, and is being humbled, the more it is enlightened by the grace of God. However, the more it gets dispersed and confused due to its haughtiness, the more it becomes troubled; therefore our mind, which is clean by nature, fills up with dirty thoughts.”

“When we suffer from narrow-mindedness, we should ask for God’s intervention. If He does not intervene then, when will He do so?”

“We must pray for other people with contrition and pain in our soul. We can only achieve this, if, due to our humbleness, we consider ourselves the cause of all the problems in the world.
- But, Father, how can you accept that you are the cause for the divorce of a married couple in Athens?
- Well, I say to myself: If I were a saint, like the old fathers, I would ask God to make them love each other again, and He would help them, as He has promised to listen to saints. Since I am not a saint, God does not listen to me. Therefore, it is my fault that this family is breaking up, as well as for the evil existing in the world. This way, I never judge anyone, but I only blame myself for everything; then God will help.”

“We must not act like children and constantly ask God for minor things. When we are asking for something, which can be humanly accomplished, we must try, as much as we can, to do it ourselves. We should only turn to God, when we, as human beings, are unable to achieve what we want.”

“The Jesus prayer must gratefully and generously spring out of our soul, while, at the same time, we think of all the good things God has done for us.”

“We should always say the Jesus prayer wherever we are; not just in the morning or at night. When we walk, we should not waste our free time, but instead take advantage of it and repeat the prayer. When we are working in a busy place and it is difficult for us to concentrate on praying, we can quietly chant without disturbing others.”

“If someone prays correctly, God listens to him, as long as what he is asking in his prayer is for the benefit of the person he prays for.”

“The prayer of those who pray for the world benefits the faithful Christians who have specific and serious problems, because both the former and the latter “are turned in the same frequency.”

“When I wish to rest, I pray. I realised that the only effective way to get some rest is through praying. Therefore, pray and study.”

“When you are about to begin your prayer, first read a section from the Holy Bible or a story from the Gerontikon, to get your mind together and your heart warmed up. Then start praying.”

“Through your prayer, you can sanctify yourself as well as your work. When there are new people at your place of work, first teach them how to become spiritually revived, and then show them the practical side of the work. I will give you an example to indicate that this is both for your own benefit as well as for the benefit of your fellow workers.
Suppose someone owns a tailor’s shop. His employees, who are not pious, curse while they are doing their work. As a result, the people who will wear the clothes they are sewing will be under the influence of the devil. Gradually, they will realise that something is wrong with this tailor shop and will start looking for another. God’s grace will also abandon the tailor shop which will eventually close down.
The opposite happens if the owner employs pious workers and looks first after their spiritual education, and then shows them the art of work.
In our days, people prefer to purchase their icons and other items from monasteries. They do so because they know that monks and nuns say the Jesus prayer while working and everything they do is blessed. When people visit a monastery and eat food cooked without oil, they find it very tasty and say:
- I haven’t eaten such a tasty dish even in the best restaurant. How can it be so tasty when it is cooked without oil?
When the cook of a restaurant curses while he is cooking and never goes to church, how can the food be blessed? On the contrary, the monk is praying while cooking and his heart is filled with positive thoughts; he thinks that he is preparing food for earthy angels to eat. Moreover, when monks sit at the table to eat, they say a prayer to bless the food. How is it possible then for the food not to taste good?
Therefore, when someone comes to your business to start work, first see that he is spiritually revived and then show him the work, so your business will have God’s blessing and be prosperous.”
Elder Paisios always prayed wholeheartedly for everyone in the world. He dedicated the day to relieve the pain of people in grief and the night to God. He rested for a few hours in the early morning, in order to regain some strength after his all night prayers and be able to help people during the day. He used to read the whole Book of Psalms on a daily basis. Sometimes, he divided the hours of the night, for instance, from 9:00- 10:00 he prayed for God to protect those who return home late from work; from 11:00- 12:00 for those who travel, so they will not be involved in any accidents; from midnight- 01:00 for God to help people stay away from ill-reputed night clubs, where they usually spend the night. In general, he prayed for every situation, for the sick people in hospitals, the married couples involved in a quarrel, etc.

Priestmonk Christodoulos (1998) “Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain”
Holy Mountain.
Source: http://www.pigizois.gr/

(Matt. 9:13). We should be the same way: we should love everyone without making any distinctions. Just like the sun rises on everyone, intelligent and unintelligent, good and evil, beautiful and ugly, our love should be like the love of God – love that’s like the sun and shines on His whole creation without making distinctions” (Elder Paisios) (83)

The Author’s Impression of Elder Paisios

I had the elder in mind. I recalled the many miracles he had worked, such as the time he had taken by the hand a man paralyzed from birth and enabled him to walk around the room. The elder had told me many details of my own life that even I had forgotten. He would feed wild bears by hand, for nature was obedient to him. He saw and conversed with saints, angels, and the Virgin Mary. He could be in a distant location without having traveled. (107)

God and Man

Later, the elder would tell me that, if God does not help man spiritually, it is impossible for man to approach the truth, and that this is why Christ came into this world. (120)

The Comparative “Caliber” of Elder Paisios

I couldn’t consider the elder to be a member of an inferior faith, as all the groups influenced by Eastern religions portrayed Christianity to be, because I had never encountered anyone of his caliber with whom to make a comparison. (147)

Differences in “free will” (pt. 1 of 5)

Suddenly, while I was watching him [Babaji] come down the stairs, I lost consciousness for an indeterminate period of time. I was standing there but my mind and self-consciousness had been seized and taken somewhere else. (148)

Differences in “free will” (pt. 2 of 5)

Babaji’s eyes roved around the room and at a certain point our eyes did in fact meet, although he wasn’t looking at me purposely. As soon as this happened, I lost all contact with my surroundings and fell into an ecstasy. It was as though I was looking into my chest, and in that inner darkness I saw my own heart in the most lurid colors and engulfed in flames. The very next moment I regained consciousness and realized what had taken place. I was quite impressed and continued to watch him carefully. (155)

Epistemological thoughts between Hinduism and Orthodox Christianity

I stood there wondering which of these two utterly divergent perspectives was, in fact, correct. I needed to find a criterion by which to determine what this teacher of teachers really was: if I could only find the proper set of scales, I would weigh him in the balance in order to discern whether he was a sorcerer or a saint. I somehow had to find a gauge that would indicate if he was a god or a devil. (157)

Wrestling with Elder Paisios

I couldn’t help being sceptical (sic) about the high spiritual level of a teacher who would resort to violence in order to protect his wallet. In fact, I found such an idea downright amusing when I recalled a similar incident involving Elder Paisios. There was a young man who had grown up around a Buddhist monastery and spent a lot of time around the elder. Even though the elder was kindly trying to help him, the young man decided that he wanted to test the elder’s strength, and he grabbed Father Paisios from behind and tried to crush his frail body with his muscular arms. Irreverently, he said, “Hey, let’s see if Saint Arsenios can help you now!”

As the elder told me later, “As soon as I heard him say that I felt as though he had uttered blasphemy. I moved my hand slightly, like this, and immediately saw him cast six feet away and slammed against the wall. He afterwards came over and made a prostration, and I told him to ask forgiveness of the saint.” From this example, I concluded that God protects spiritual people in a spiritual way, and not with their own use of the martial arts, which (apart from being potentially injurious) hardly reflects the character that befits a saint. (176)

Differences in “free will” (pt. 3 of 5)

Suddenly, I became aware that I was jerking my head back and forth, as though I were trying to rid myself of something that had sat on top of it. I rubbed my eyes vigorously in order to awake from this condition. In the meantime, the crowd became alarmed and recoiled from me in fear, and many even fled the group. I felt sure it was the work of the yogi. Nevertheless, when I came to, I looked at him indifferently and though, “You huckster, you’re nothing to write home about.” To me, he seemed to be showing off. I blamed him, but I wasn’t angry with him: I had lost all interest in him and his powers. Shortly thereafter, I returned to my hotel and went to sleep.

When I later reflected on what had taken place, I realized that I couldn’t tell when I had lost control over my senses. I didn’t know when this state had begun, how long it lasted, or what I did while I was in it… (184-185)

Differences in “free will” (pt. 4 of 5)

The whole time the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” was stuck in my mind, as it would be for days after. The melody was positively enchanting, but it still bothered me that it had been implanted there without my consent, and again I had cause to reflect on the opposite practice of the elder, who always asked my permission, respecting my person. At daybreak, I returned to my room for some sleep. (197)

Differences in “free will” (pt. 5 of 5)

I felt as though someone had stolen the keys to my consciousness, hypnotizing me from a distance while I was asleep and breaking into the house of my soul. (198)

Contours of Divine Knowledge

I knew then that these are not matters to be judged by the intellect, which can hardly comprehend them. Instead, they are the province of a divine knowledge born in the heart, which is much more certain and profound than what usually passes for knowledge. (230)

Elder Paisios in the Light of the Transfiguration

One day some time later, when I was leaving Elder Paisios’s cell, I recalled something that was troubling me and I mentioned it to him: “Elder, that yogi, Niranjan, was able to produce a light.” “What kind of light?” he asked. “Once, when we were all sitting around him, his body suddenly started to give off a golden-yellowish light in the form of a continually expanding sphere, which eventually engulfed us all. I wasn’t the same afterwards – It altered my way of thinking. What was that light?”

Without saying a word, the elder gently lifted up his hand and placed it on my head. Suddenly, the entire yard was flooded with a light that welled forth from the elder and could be seen in all directions. It was as powerful as a flash of lightning, but it was continuous, showing no sign of passing away. Although it was intense, it didn’t hurt my eyes. On the contrary, I couldn’t get my fill of looking at this sweet, immaterial, noetic light. And, although the light was supernatural and rare – not like a white light, but more like glass, or water – there was still something so very natural about it that it didn’t startle me, but instead granted me a profound sense of joy. This light was all-embracing and intoxicating yet it left my movements peaceful and my mind extremely lucid. Although I was absorbed by the vision of this light, I continued to see my natural surroundings. My five senses continued to function normally, while alongside of them another sense, a spiritual kind of vision, had begun to function as well. Although it was around noon and the sun was shining brightly, when the immaterial light began to emanate from Father Paisios, the sun’s light seemed weak by comparison, like that of the late-afternoon sun.

I didn’t say a word, but I understood many things. Afterwards, when I reached the Monastery of Koutloumousiou, the monks could see that I was deeply changed and asked me, “You’re coming from Elder Paisios, aren’t you?” I nodded my head. The experience left a mark on my soul that I can still feel twenty years later, even though the intensity of my feelings waned within a few days. It left my soul with a sweet peace, which deeply changed me in a mystical, hidden way.

Truly, if I had remained ignorant of the light that came forth from the elder, I would have remained impressed by the enchanting light of the yogi – which was, in fact, truly remarkable. But after my experience, I naturally made the comparison between the light of Niranjan and the light of the elder. These two lights were as vastly different as an old piece of tin differs from a bar of solid gold, as falsehood differs from truth, and as man differ from God. The elder’s invincible light not only surpassed the light of the yogi, but it utterly prevailed over it. I had already heard so much from the elder about the light of the yogis, but words just weren’t sufficient to grant me true understanding, so he had granted me this spiritual gift so that I could understand the difference by experience.

Once, when I was speaking with the elder about the lights that one sees during meditation, he told me, “We don’t want to see those kinds of lights, so we turn away from them. When I was at the hermitage of Saint Epistimi in the Sinai desert, I would leave my cave at night and go to pray at the neighboring peak, from which I could see the monastery. I would hold a lighter in my hand that I would light every so often so that I could see where I was walking on the rocks. One night, when I had walked a few steps from the cave, there appeared a light as bright as a spotlight that illumined the whole region as though it were day. I realized that it was from the evil one and said to myself, “I don’t want to see that kind of light,’ and I returned back to the cave.

As powerful as my experiences with the elder were, his words were of great value as well. Of course, I can do no more than express what I understood of his words, along with the writings and spoken teachings of other spiritual strugglers. From these, I gathered that the spiritual phenomena I had experienced were a result of the natural receptivity of the human soul to both divine grace and demonic influence. On this plane, all depends upon a person’s free will, in accordance with which he opens the gateway of his soul to Christ or to the devil. When people trample on their conscience, the law written in their hearts by God in order to guide them towards the good, they alienate themselves from Him, the source of goodness and light. Their minds grow dark and they commit sins that give the devil the “right” to linger around them – and this is how people find themselves under demonic influence.

If they continue further along this path, the evil spirits will enter them and they will become demonically possessed. But the elders on Mount Athos had also known people, such as sorcerers and Satanists, whose minds were so perverse that they wanted the demons to enter them and actually invoked the demons so that the devil would come and seize their souls. Some were motivated to do this because they lusted for power over others – so that others would admire them and be obedient to them. And, often, they desired worldly goods and sinful pleasures in order to satisfy whatever passions might dominate them.

In any event, when a person has become open to demonic influence, the devil can indeed grant him, or rather exercise through him, the considerable power the devil naturally posses as a spirit. Thus, such a man might gain great physical capabilities, such as were possessed by the man who had an unclean spirit in the country of the Gadarenes, who was able to break his chains into pieces. He might be able to alter his appearance, to speak with peculiar voices, to cause himself to levitate, or to make lights or different objects to appear. He may seem to be able to foretell events, and he may be able to reveal a person’s hidden sins, amazing and frightening his hearers with knowledge of the past. Moreover, acting through the demons, such a man can exploit others; imaginations in order to form images and sounds in their minds, and can also bring about striking physical effects, such as cracking a mammoth tree or shattering a large boulder. I knew these phenomena well.

Nevertheless, the elder told me, Christ has bound the devil, so that he cannot wreak all the havoc that he desires. “The most insignificant demon has such power that he could make the entire earth collapse with a stroke of his tail, but God does not allow it.” On another occasion he said, “Suppose the president were speaking on the balcony before a crowd of thousands watching him from below. If God permitted the devil to appear on that balcony for just one moment, they would all drop dead from fear.”

And yet, despite the terrifying visage of the devil in his true form, a person who has opened his soul to the devil’s power may appear to be quite virtuous. The elder referred to a passage from the New Testament: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. (II Cor. 11:13-15)

On the other hand, when someone approaches God by keeping His commandments and participating in the Mysteries of Christ, God comes to abide in that person’s soul. With the keeping of Christ’s commandments, man shows his love for God, and when a man loves Christ, he will keep his words, and His Father will love him, and They will com to unto him, and make Their abode with him (cf. John 14:23). Then man’s soul is so closely united with God that he and God become one: He that is joined unto the Lord is one in spirit (I Cor. 6:17). Thus, man’s soul experiences theosis and acquires by grace those traits that are God’s by nature: immortality, light, glory, knowledge of the future and the past, dominion over matter, authority over illness, and much more. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory (II Cor. 3:18). In such a person, the light of Christ that is present in his soul is so intense that it also illumines his body, so that when that person so wills for reasons he knows best, he can reveal his soul’s glory to others. He does so even as Christ revealed His divinity to His three disciples on Mount Tabor: Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as light (Matt. 17:1-2).

In time I realized that Father Paisios could also be numbered in the company of these God-bearers. By his words, deeds, and life, he manifested the light of Christ – and, when there was a need, he also manifested it in a special, supernatural way. (258-263)

The Difference Between the Jesus Prayer and the Yogi Mantras (282-285)

Now consider how the yogis view the mantra. First of all, thee are many mantras, and each refers to one of the many gods of the Hindu pantheon such as Krishna, Rama, Vishnu, or the goddess Kali. There is not one standard explanation given by yogis for the mantras; rather, their explanations are tailored to the receptivity of each listener. For beginners who are not disposed to worship idols, yogis give a pseudo-scientific, mechanistic explanation: they claim that the benefit accrued by repeating the mantra is due to certain frequencies produced by its pronunciation, which cause spiritual vibrations that activate spiritual centers within man. (However, the existence of such centers in man can only be taken on faith – if someone willingly chooses to believe such a claim.) For those who are inclined towards psychological interpretations, the yogis present the repetition of a mantra as a type of auto-suggestion that enables the practitioner to program his inner world according to positive models. When addressing those who have become more involved with Hinduism and now believe in many gods, the yogis claim that the worshipper receives the blessing of whatever god is being invoked.

What constitutes the infinite distance separating the Christian Jesus Prayer from the Hindu mantra, however, is that which lurks behind the name of the god being invoked in a mantra and invited into the soul. Through the mouth of the Holy Prophet David, God declares, All the gods of the nations are demons (Ps. 95:5) – in other words, behind the names Krishna, Rama, or Shiva are demons lying in wait. Once they are invoked by the use of the mantra, the door is open for the devil to begin his theatrical productions, using sounds, images, dreams, and the imagination in general in order to drag the practitioner deeper into deception.

Another significant difference between the Christian Jesus Prayer and the Hindu mantra is the diametrically opposed viewpoints of the two faiths regarding techniques and the human subject. I recall a conversation I had with Niranjan after he had given me permission to begin to practice some supposedly powerful yoga techniques. I said to him, “It’s fine practicing the techniques, but what happens to the human passions of greed, lust for power, vainglory, and selfishness? Aren’t we concerned about them?” “They disappear,” he replied, “through the practice of the techniques.” “Do they just disappear like that, on their own?” I asked. “Yes, they disappear automatically, while you are practicing the techniques.”

What an astonishing assertion: physical exercises can wipe out the inclinations that a person’s soul acquired in life through conscious choices. But, in reality, man, as a self-determining and free moral agent, can change the conscious aspect of his personality and his moral sense only by the use of his own free will to make conscious decisions in real-life situations. Any external means to automatically induce such a change in a person’s consciousness without his consent circumvents man’s free will, obliterates his volition, and destroys his freedom, reducing man to a spineless puppet manipulated by a marionettist’s strings. Hinduism’s relentless insistence on properly performed techniques with automatic results degrades man by depriving him of his most precious quality: the self-governing free will. It restricts the boundless human spirit within a framework of mechanical methods and reflexes.

Orthodox Christian Faith, on the contrary, recognizes and honors the gift of human freedom as a divine trait. This recognition and approach help man to be actualized as a free being. Precisely on account of the human freedom to choose, man’s often-unpredictable responses can’s be limited to the mechanical reflexes of a closed system, but can innovatively turn in any spiritual direction that he, as a free subject, wills. This is why Orthodoxy is not adamant about techniques and methods. In freedom and with respect, Orthodoxy seeks the human heart, encouraging the individual to do what is good for the sake of the good, and pointing out the appropriate moral sense of the soul before God, which an individual can hen freely choose to embrace.

Genuine spiritual development entails a deepening familiarity with God and with one’s own self, acquired through moral choices that a person freely makes in the depths of his heart. Spiritual progress is a product of man’s way of relating to himself, to his fellow man, and to God by the good use of his innate moral freedom. This is why Christ calls out, If any man wills to come after Me, let him freely deny himself (Matt. 16:24) – that is, without being deceived, without being psychologically compelled, and without being forced, all of which are inappropriate to the spiritual nobility of the Christian life.

Father Porphyrios had a small parrot that he taught to pray in order to illustrate the absurdity of some Christians’ empty repetition of the words of prayer, as well as the ridiculousness of the opinion commonly presented in Eastern religions that someone can make moral advances by physical exercises or breathing techniques. Every so often, the parrot would mechanically say, “Lord, have mercy.” The elder would respond, “Look, the parrot can say the prayer, but does that mean that it is praying?” Can prayer exist without the conscious and free participation of the person who prays?” (282-285)

Who is Elder Paisios?

“My child, I’m just a human being. I pray to Christ and he replies. If His grace abandoned me, I’d be just another bum on the streets of Omonia” (Omonia Square in Athens, known at that time for being populated by drug addicts, prostitutes, and thieves.) – Elder Paisios (288)

http://theirheartsshallliveforever.yolasite.com/the-gurus-the-young-man-and-elder-paisios.php font-family: Calibri;"> “When someone gives his heart to God, then the mind of this man is also seized by the love of God. He is indifferent towards worldly things and continually thinks about the Heavenly Father, and being divinely in love, he glorifies his Creator day and night like an angel.”
“Ask for repentance in your prayer and nothing else, neither for divine lights, nor miracles, nor prophecies, nor spiritual gifts—nothing but repentance. Repentance will bring you humility, humility will bring you the Grace of God, and God will have in His Grace everything you need for your salvation, or anything you might need to help another soul.
“Things are very simple, and there is no reason why we should complicate them. If we regard matters in this way, we will feel the Jesus Prayer as a necessity and will not grow weary. We will be able to repeat it many times and our heart will feel a sweet pain, and then Christ Himself will shed His sweet consolation inside our heart.
“Thus prayer does not tire but invigorates. It is tiresome only when we do not enter into its meaning and do not understand the sense given it by our Holy Fathers. Once we comprehend the need of God's mercy, the desire of this hunger will compel us, without pressuring ourselves in prayer, to open our mouth like a nursing infant, and we will feel, simultaneously, all the security and joy of a baby in its mother's embrace.”
"Nobody doubts that the enemy will try to war against us and to disperse our thoughts. However, when preceded by a little bit of Patristic study (e.g. The Sayings of the Fathers) a lid is put on all our cares, great and small, and on the days temptations. So, it is transformed into another atmosphere, a spiritual one and you pray with concentration".
"If you anger when you yourself are offended, your anger is unclean. But if someone is offended in the service of holiness, that means the zeal of God is in him. Indignation can be righteous when it’s indignation for God’s sake. That’s the only justifiable kind of indignation in a person. It’s unseemly to become angry in one’s own defense. Resisting evildoers is another matter, however, when it’s in defense of serious spiritual matters, when our holy faith, Orthodoxy, is concerned. Then it’s your duty.
